Brits Pay Less for Holidays in Spain

Valencia, Spain (PRWEB) July 24, 2009

Spanish holiday-makers are paying less for their holidays, according to research from new holiday rental website, SpanishHolidaysDirect.com. Overall bookings for holiday villas and apartments in Spain are down, while the proportion of bookings made on the internet is still rising.

A survey of holiday makers on the Costa Blanca and Costa del Sol revealed that a very high proportion had booked their holiday via friends and family rather than through an agent or even direct with the owner online. Cash-strapped 18-30 year olds were especially likely to be staying with friends, at 50%.

Of those who booked their holiday commercially, the internet has become the most popular method by a long way. 44% of holidaymakers booked via the internet, with just 15% booking through a travel agent.

At the same time, figures from the Spanish National Statistics Institute show occupancy rates and rental income for holiday apartments in Spain are falling: average rent fell 3.3% in the year to April 2009, and the average number of overnight stays fell by a huge 14.6% in the same period. Anecdotal evidence shows that prices are dropping even further as owners try harder to fill their holiday villas for the summer.

“The news is not great for property owners,” said Lucy Madle from SpanishHolidaysDirect. “Many are looking to cut their advertising costs, which is why we’ve launched SpanishHolidaysDirect.com. Holiday-makers, on the other hand, should get on the internet and see what’s available. There are some great value holiday villas out there.”

SpanishHolidaysDirect advertise holiday villas in all areas of Spain, including the Costa del Sol, Costa Blanca and Mallorca
