Puerto Rico

San Juan, Puerto Rico (PRWEB) February 17, 2012

U.S. Commerce Secretary John Bryson today appointed Mario González-Lafuente, executive director of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company (PRTC), to the Travel and Tourism Advisory Board (TTAB) of the U.S. Department of Commerce, as part of a strategy to promote the United States.

The announcement of González-Lafuente’s participation as one of the 32 members of the TTAB was made during visit by President Obama and Commerce Secretary Bryson to Orlando, Florida today and is the latest in a series of “We Can’t Wait” actions that President Obama and his administration have undertaken to aid job creation through executive action.

As part of today’s swearing-in ceremony and inaugural meeting of the TTAB, González-Lafuente will present his thoughts to Secretary Bryson and fellow Board members on the issues he feels most affect the travel and tourism industry. For González-Lafuente, these are as follows:

Broaden the current Visa Waiver Program, to include those countries that have historically provided large numbers of visitors to the United States. This is particularly important for emerging economies such as those of Brazil, Colombia, Chile and Mexico, for example.

Improve efficiencies at U.S. consular offices to reduce the backlog of requests for tourist visas. Support in-transit programs for airports that have been negatively affected by the changes that resulted from 9/11.

This would result in increased access to different markets in the U.S. for international airlines, support U.S. Open Skies agreements efforts, and increase air traffic in markets that have been affected by post-9/11 changes. It would also support destinations that are currently only served through the major air hubs allowing, for example, for a market such as Puerto Rico to become a strategic connecting hub for Latin America and the Caribbean.

Increase awareness of the financial benefits to hotel owners and developers by implementing green tourism initiatives. Puerto Rico has developed guidelines for green hotels, for example, and green tourism has been growing on the island with the development of eco-friendly and eco-related attractions.

“This Board represents the eyes and ears of our nation’s travel and tourism industry and I am committed to working with each of the esteemed members to bring more visitors to the United States,” Bryson said. “I appreciate the Board members’ dedication to our economic recovery and look forward to working with González-Lafuente to put ideas into action to bolster job creation in this critical economic sector.”

“Congratulations to Mario for this designation, which honors his vast experience and knowledge of the tourism industry. Likewise, this appointment represents the federal government´s acknowledgment of the great advance Puerto Rico has made in positioning the Island as one of the most important tourism destinations in the hemisphere. Through Mario, we wish to continue to contribute to the development of the tourism sector in the United States, by developing strategies and participating directly in the economic recovery of the Nation,” said the governor of Puerto Rico, Luis G. Fortuño.

PRTC’s executive director has dedicated most of his professional life to the travel and tourism industry, including more than a decade as part of PRTC. González-Lafuente has held various positions within the organization in areas such as marketing, public relations and promotion. He was directly involved in developing the organization’s strategic marketing plans, maximizing Puerto Rico’s exposure in the U.S. and developing policy for the cruise ship industry. His knowledge of the inner workings of PRTC, and the industry as a whole, has provided his tenure as Executive Director with the vision that gives San Juan Puerto Rico a successful platform in the travel industry.

Ohio (PRWEB) February 12, 2012

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Ohio artist Ryan Corbell has invented a captivating heart-shaped sculpture that metamorphoses into a working piece of art.

Corbell’s invention starts out in the shape of a beautiful red Valentine, and then it transforms into something completely different. “On the surface it appears as a heart,” Corbell said. “But when you begin pulling on the levers, turning keys and sliding the different parts, it transforms like magic.”

The Valentine-shaped steampunk device is inspired in part by a childhood gift. “While going through boxes, I found this small wooden house from my childhood, it was like finding a lost treasure” recalled Corbell, who is now in his 30s. “I remembered exactly how it worked just like it was yesterday. The foundation slides and a small drawer are exposed. Inside the drawer is a key. The front doors of the house are then opened, and you insert the key and unlock it and then the roof flips up. Surprise! The house is actually a secret hiding place in disguise.”

Corbell was completely fascinated by the wooden house, which was a gift from someone whom he thought of as a father. Ultimately, the house became one of his most cherished possessions. Corbell said: “Never underestimate the impact a gift like this can have on a young child. Some day the child grows up and is inspired to create art or becomes an inventor or a scientist. Who knows?”

Additionally, the sculpture was inspired by the story of Alice in Wonderland. It is also reminiscent of the inner workings of automata, which often used brass mechanisms and clockwork-type motions to create a primitive form of animation. In addition, the juxtaposition of modern technology with more primitive form conveys the essence of steampunk. The mechanical heart uses a bit of science fiction, fantasy and gothic aesthetics to reveal a wonderful surprise inside.

Examining and reconfiguring objects was a natural part of Corbell’s upbringing. Raised mostly by his Depression-era grandparents, Corbell was always looking for things in the house to experiment with. “My grandparents kept everything, especially my grandmother,” he said. “I had a blast taking things apart and rebuilding them. I basically had my own workshop in the basement.”

Today, Corbell uses that same inquisitive nature to create uniquely functional pieces of art. He makes artistic pieces that combine form and function, so they not only look aesthetically-pleasing but also serve a useful purpose. He encourages others to use their imagination and hands to create their own work of art. It all starts with making a prototype of the concept, he says. “Making a prototype allows your idea to come to life,” he explained. “You keep refining it, making it run smoother, and reshaping the form of it. It can be art—but it doesn’t have to be.”

ORLANDO, FLA. (PRWEB) February 08, 2012

PandaLabs, Panda Security’s anti-malware laboratory, today warned consumers to be aware of suspicious links, emails and messages as Valentine’s Day approaches. As in previous years, there are already numerous emails in circulation with links for downloading romantic greeting cards, videos, gift ideas, and Facebook and Twitter messages related to Valentine’s Day.

Social engineering is the cyber-crook’s preferred technique for deceiving users, primarily obtaining confidential information from users by convincing them to take a series of actions. Crimeware and social engineering go hand-in-hand: a carefully selected social engineering ploy convinces users to hand over their data or install a malicious program which captures information and sends it to the fraudsters.

Cyber-crooks are also exploiting other channels such as Facebook, Twitter or Google+, and with their access to millions of users that these social networks provide, they have become just as popular among the criminal fraternity for spreading malware. A new Facebook attack that takes advantage of users’ walls to spread has recently been discovered. An apparently harmless message invites users to install a Valentine’s Day theme on Facebook but when the user clicks the wall post, they are redirected to a page where they are prompted to install the theme. This installs a malware file which, once run, displays ads from other websites. It also downloads an extension that monitors Web activities and redirects sessions to survey pages that request sensitive information like phone numbers.

The PandaLabs blog previously reported on a suspicious Twitter profile that took users to a particular dating site. PandaLabs predicts that special occasions like Valentine’s Day will bear witness to a proliferation of malicious Twitter posts used to steal users’ confidential data and empty their bank accounts through social engineering.

Following are several examples of Valentine’s Day-themed malware campaigns detected by PandaLabs in recent years:

Waledac.C: This worm, spread by email, tried to pass itself off as a greeting card and included a malicious link to access it. If the user clicked the link and accepted the subsequent file download, they were allowed the Waledac.C worm into their computer. Once it infected the computer, the worm used the affected user’s email to send out spam.

I Love.exe you: This was a RAT (Remote Access Trojan) that gave attackers access to the victim’s computer and all their personal information. The Trojan allowed the virus creator to access target computers remotely, steal passwords and manage files.

Nuwar.OL: This worm spread in email messages with subjects like “I Love You So Much,” “Inside My Heart” or “You in My Dreams.” The text of the email included a link to a website that downloaded the malicious code. The page was very simple and looked like a romantic greeting card with a large pink heart. Once it infected a computer, the worm sent out a large amount of emails, creating a heavy load on networks and slowing down computers. Following is a screenshot of a website that downloaded the Nuwar.OL worm: http://prensa.pandasecurity.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/NuwarOL.jpg

Valentin.E: This worm spread by email with subjects like “Searching for True Love” or “True Love” and an attached file called “friends4u.” If the targeted user opened the file, a copy of the worm was downloaded. The worm then sent out emails with copies of itself from the infected computer to spread and infect more users. Following is a screenshot of the desktop wallpaper displayed by Valentin.E: http://prensa.pandasecurity.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/Valentin.E.jpg

Storm Worm: This worm spread via email by employing a number of lures, one of them exploiting Valentine’s Day. If the targeted user clicked the link in the email, a Web page was displayed while the worm was downloaded in the background. Following is a screenshot of the web page displayed by Storm Worm: http://prensa.pandasecurity.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/STORMWORM.jpg

PandaLabs offers users a series of tips to avoid falling victim to computer threats:

Do not open emails or messages received on social networks from unknown senders.

Do not click any links included in email messages, even though they may come from reliable sources. It is better to type the URL directly in the browser. This rule applies to messages received through any mail client, as well as those in Facebook, Twitter, or other social networks or messaging applications, etc. If you do click on any such links, take a close look at the page you arrive at and if you don’t recognize it, close your browser.

Do not run attached files that come from unknown sources. Stay on alert for files that claim to be Valentine Day’s greeting cards, romantic videos, etc.

Even if the page seems legitimate, but asks you to download something, you should be suspicious and not accept the download. If you download and install any type of executable file and you begin to see unusual messages on your computer, you have likely been infected with malware.

If you are making any purchases online, type the address of the store in the browser, rather than going through any links that have been sent to you. Only buy online from sites that have a solid reputation and offer secure transactions, encrypting all information that is entered in the page.

Do not use shared or public computers or an unsecured WiFi connection for making transactions or operations that require you to enter passwords or other personal details.

Have an effective security solution installed, capable of detecting both known and new malware strains.

Panda Security offers several free tools for scanning computers for malware, like Panda Cloud Antivirus: http://www.cloudantivirus.com. More information is available in the PandaLabs blog: http://pandalabs.pandasecurity.com.

About PandaLabs

Since 1990, PandaLabs, Panda Security’s malware research laboratory, has been working to detect and classify malware in order to protect consumers and companies against new Internet threats. To do so, PandaLabs uses Collective Intelligence, a cloud-based proprietary system that leverages the knowledge gathered from Panda’s user community to automatically detect, analyze and classify the more than 73,000 new malware strains that appear every day. This automated malware classification is complemented through the work of an international team with researchers specialized each in a specific type of malware (viruses, worms, Trojans, spyware and other attacks) to provide global coverage. Get more information about PandaLabs and subscribe to its blog news feed at http://www.pandalabs.com/es.
Medical Tourism Saves Cash

LeClaire, IA (PRWEB) February 01, 2012

An estimated 50 million Americans do not have health insurance because they can’t afford the high cost. Millions more who do have insurance lack adequate coverage.

When major health issues occur, these same Americans feel helpless in tackling the high cost of care in the United States, until they discover medical tourism which is obtaining needed treatment outside the United States.

When most Americans first hear about medical tourism, their first reaction typically is to ask, how safe it is and what is the quality compared to the United States?

Unfortunately far too many people still have the misconception that health care overseas is inferior to the treatment received in the U.S.A. But in today’s world, this belief is no longer true.

In numerous countries around the world, hospitals meet the same high standards and receive the same quality accreditation that American hospitals achieve.

Such accreditation certification is only granted when a hospital meets or exceeds the same standards of excellence that is expected of American hospitals. Several accreditation processes exist around the world that are quite similar to each other, all ensure the highest standards of care and treatment are being offered.

This means that Americans who use medical tourism services can feel confident when traveling abroad, knowing that they will receive high quality medical care without the massive expenses they would face in the United States.

The only difference between getting medical care in the U.S. and going to a highly accredited hospital overseas, is the far lower cost outside the United States.

Pam Brammann, R.N., President and Managing Director of IHT World, LLC pointed out that if a person is in need of non-emergency surgery such as hip or knee replacement, cancer treatment, advanced stem cell therapy, dental implants, etc. and the insurance company does not offer adequate coverage, the difference in medical tourism prices compared to the United States can often yield a savings of tens of thousands of dollars.

Mrs. Brammann said, “If a person can obtain American quality treatment or surgery in another country and end up paying half the price including the cost of travel expenses for two, why wouldn’t Americans consider medical tourism?

Flagstaff, AZ (PRWEB) January 31, 2012

Back2Basics is re-launching its website to give the families of struggling young men facing addiction, a more dynamic look into the outdoor adventure program and life skill building activities.

“The Back2Basics team wanted to create a website that would be easy to navigate and aesthetically pleasing. Between the creativity led by Carly [Robertson] and myself, we have developed a great platform that I hope better services our families and those seeking advice about recovery programs,” founder and CEO, Roy DuPrez said.

Despite the small business and intimate atmosphere at B2B, this unique approach to drug and alcohol recovery is going above and beyond to be available as a resource for families in crisis.

“I really like the ‘Why Flagstaff?’ page. The idea of my son going to Flagstaff demonstrates the natural outdoor environment, and provides healing [that] the city can’t,” B2B father from California said.

While many treatment centers fall under the corporate umbrella, B2B has remained intimate and hands on for almost two years, and intends to keep it that way.

“I love the outdoor pictures [on the website]. They are genuine; I can feel that outdoor experience through these images,” B2B mother from California said.

The program is geared toward young men with addiction problems, and seeks out creative, intuitive and constructive ways to help them find recovery. From surfing in Ixtapa, Mexico, to healthy food consumption by a trained culinary professional Back2Basics Outdoor Adventures has given the term “sober living” a facelift.

“Roy has been so adamant about keeping B2B’s online presence true to the business’ roots. Back2Basics is exactly what it sounds like – teaching young men who are fighting alcohol and drug addiction to go ‘back to the basics’ of living. It was a great challenge to mesh the simplicity and naturalness of the program with the modern digital world. I really think we captured Roy’s vision,” Back2Basics Marketing Coordinator, Carly Robertson said.

In addition to the re-launch of the website B2B has also hired new staff, Robertson included, who will focus on the company’s online presence – social media, the Back2Basics blog and a new YouTube account, which will give outsiders a dynamic look into the outdoor adventure program.

Back2Basics has an experiential approach to recovery and its new website allows the viewer to experience what the program has to offer.

“Although, I have only been working with Back2Basics for a short time, I can tell there is major difference between this recovery program and the others. The online changes B2B is making will truly set it apart, even more so, from the rest,” Robertson said.
